Jonathan has published on cost-benefit analysis, privatisation, computer history, forecasting, seasonality, the steel and scrap industries, consumption behaviour, foresight and on wildfires.

In 2007 Jonathan gave the Barraclough Memorial Lecture to the Sheffield Metallurgical and Engineering Association on the development of the wide strip mill in europe and a paper with Dr Albertson won the Williams Award of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining. Jonathan is a past President of Manchester Statistical Society and he won a Partnership Trust Award for innovative teaching in economics.

Research Interests

Mr Aylen's research interests and publications in economics, technology and history cover a very wide range of topics including foresight and forecasting; open innovation and natural experiments; computerisation in steel and the history of process control; rolling mill design; the impact of climate change on tourism and forecasting wild fires in the face of climate change; recycling and clean production, alongside earlier research on cost-benefit analysis of historic building preservation; international comparisons of performance; privatisation; choice of technique in steelmaking; and the econometrics of seasonality.

His research on forecasting attracted sustained funding from Corus Engineering Steels for almost two decades. He has extensive experience working with small firms in the North West of England, particularly on issues of supply chain management, plant layout and lean manufacturing. Jonathan has acted as consultant to a range of international bodies on steel and trade issues, including OECD and the ILO.

He is a frequent keynote speaker at international conferences on steel technology; is a member of the rolling committee of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining. Jonathan has given recent conference papers on the history of technology in Europe and North America.
