Manchester as a business city

Manchester, the original modern city, birth place of the computer and the industrial revolution, is a European business capital, and a vibrant multicultural city where students of all races and religions quickly feel at home.

You can be part of the fastest-growing city region outside of London. The 2008 UK Cities Monitor named Manchester as best regional location for business, whilst European Cities Monitor 2010 placed Manchester the 12th best city in Europe 'to locate a business today', 2nd in the UK behind London. Manchester is widely credited as Britain's most creative city.

The city has expertise in key areas:

Knowledge economy

Knowledge-based industries thrive - from biotechnology, software development and ICT - to finance, environmental technology and electronics. These dynamic companies benefit from the brain power and research resources of Greater Manchester's four universities.

Manchester is the largest and fastest growing centre in the UK for financial, professional and legal services outside London. More than 200,000 people work in the sector. As England's largest regional corporate finance and stock-broking centre, 60 banks (40 overseas-owned) have offices in Manchester. These include the Bank of New York and The Royal Bank of Scotland.

Creative, new media and digital

Manchester's global reputation for innovation has made the city a major centre for the creative, digital and new media sector, which employs some 64,000 people in 5,800 businesses. The city region is a creative hub and its international importance will increase with the relocation of five BBC departments to the 200-acre 'MediaCity:UK' development.

Manchester accounts for 75% of the regional life science and biomedical sector in the North West. The city region is also recognised as a member of the 'European Super League' of biotech clusters by executive search and selection consultancy Strategem, and is ranked in the top 50 in the world by Boston Consulting. Biotech companies based in the Manchester area include AstraZeneca, Avecia, Renovo and Intercytex.

Manchester Airport serves over 200 worldwide destinations and is the largest regional airport in the UK. Excellent rail links mean that London is just over two hours away.
