Teaching Excellence at MBS

Our innovative approach means that 'getting there first' is at the heart of who we are - whether we're conducting groundbreaking research, reviewing our teaching methods or providing creative solutions for industry. We have over 200 academic staff who are recognised as experts in their research by fellow academics who can be called upon in a wide range of fields.

The appointment of specialist professors in creativity, innovation management, retailing, corporate reputation and business development were among the first of their kind, while our expertise in small business management led to our faculty advising the UK government's committee for small business.

A progressive curriculum

  • Research excellence underlies our teaching - offering you some powerful insights into the latest management thinking. For example, faculty research into trust-building is used in leadership electives; research into creativity in teams is applied in several of the School's projects; one member of faculty has used his innovative research to evaluate the impact of plasma screen technology on consumers' images of stores and shopping malls in the Advanced Retail Management elective of the MBA programme.
  • Our teaching staff consult widely - they have worked with organisations like BP, BT, BNFL, Marks and Spencer, PZ Cussons, the NHS, Tesco, the World Bank and parliamentary committees - and supervise live company projects, which means they are continually exposed to new management practices and problems which can enrich your learning.
  • You will also come into contact with many external experts and business leaders, who provide regular guest lectures and tutorials, offering an additional educational perspective.
  • Faculty spend a fifth of their time consulting in industry and supervising students at the project stage. Continually solving management problems they're using these to enrich your learning.
  • Projects allow you to work on the very latest management issues as they develop.
  • Faculty can draw on their own consultancy experience and develop real life company case studies so you gain a range of up-to-date business issues.

What we're doing now

  • We're at the forefront of e-government - working with government departments in areas from CRM to crime reduction
  • Using our expertise in retail, we're examining the effect of e-commerce on traditional retail
  • We're building on our pioneering research that has created new, more accurate methods of options pricing
