Professor Cary Cooper appeared on BBC Radio Scotland, offering a psychologist’s perspective on the pressure on individuals in the workplace to work long hours. Professor Cooper explained how the UK has the longest working hours and talked about his research which examined the link between long hours and ill health. He discussed how line managers should be responsible for employee well-being and the need for them to develop ‘soft skills’ to address issues. The long working hours culture is a big contributor to stress-related illnesses, which in turn contributes to the UK’s low productivity per capita. Professor Cooper compared the UK’s productivity statistics to Germany, which are the most productive, but work less hours in contrast.
