Entry requirements

Entry requirements for 2017-18 entry are detailed below.

PhD entry requirements

Your application will be assessed according to the following criteria. Please note that all criteria will be considered.

1. Academic qualifications

Applicants must hold:

  • A Bachelors degree or equivalent qualification
  • A Masters degree

The level of attainment for the Bachelors degree will normally be equivalent to that of a First Class or Upper Second Class Honours UK Bachelors degree. Professional qualifications and relevant experience may be taken into account for entry to a PhD programme where applicants do not have a Bachelors degree.

All applicants must have a Masters degree.

For the Masters degree, we require an overall grade of 60 or above; B or above; GPA of 3 or above. For those applying for the PhD in Accounting and Finance, please note that applicants are expected to hold a relevant Masters degree in finance, accounting or a cognate subject area. Normally we require performance at distinction level (70% or above) including any dissertation component; GPA of 3.3 or above; or equivalent.

PLEASE NOTE: Qualifications from non-UK institutions must be equivalent to UK qualifications. Grading schemes of some institutions may vary - please provide an official grading scheme with your transcripts.

2. English Language Proficiency

You will be exempt from providing the IELTS/TOEFL/Pearson score if you are a native English speaker from, are a current student of OR have graduated from a UK institution or country where English is the first language (see list below) within the last five years.

If you do not meet the above criteria you need to demonstrate your English proficiency by taking one of the following tests: IELTS, TOEFL or Pearson (PTE).

The minimum overall score required is:

  • IELTS: 7.0 (with a minimum of 6.0 in each component)
  • TOEFL: 100 internet-based (with a minimum of 20 in each component - internet based) or 623 paper-based.
  • Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE): 66 (with a minimum of 51 in each component)

If you are uncertain if these exemptions apply to you, please email the postgraduate research programmes office for clarification.

In exceptional cases, an IELTS score of 6.5 (or TOEFL 594 paper-based/90 internet-based or PTE 59) will be considered if you can demonstrate exceptional academic achievement. However, you must have achieved the minimum component scores in your particular test.

Evidence of exceptional performance is:

  • Distinction level performance in Masters qualifications, or
  • Previous research output published in high quality academic journals.

Evidence of your exceptional achievements (such as transcripts, copies of articles) should be accompanied by a short supporting statement from you. Without this supporting statement, your application will not be considered.

Please note that we do not accept English scores that are over two years old at point of entry to the programme. If you do not currently have a TOEFL/IELTS/PTE score report when you submit your application, please indicate the date that you will be taking the test.

3. Research Proposal

All applicants to the PhD programme are required to submit a research proposal. Your application will be considered as incomplete unless a proposal is included.

For further details about what you should include in your proposal and how long it should be, please visit the research proposal section of the website. The research proposal is used to assess your aptitude for doctoral research and your ability to outline a research project that is suitable for a PhD.

We also recommend that you provide a personal statement outlining your general interests in studying a PhD, your personal motivations for doing so and any flexibility in your chosen area(s) of research.

4. The capacity to supervise your project and its fit within the relevant part of Alliance MBS

We can only make offers for a place on the PhD programme where we have capacity to provide relevant supervisory expertise.

Your proposal needs to fit within the research interests of Alliance MBS and be in an area in which we have capacity to supervise.

Please note that in some very popular areas of study there may be limited supervision capacity.

MPhil entry requirements
