Other research options
Although most of our students apply to study a PhD, we offer a range of programmes to meet candidates' specific requirements. If you are interested in any of these study options, please contact us for more details on the programme and how to make your application.
The Master of Research in Management is a one year Master's degree which is designed to give students the opportunity to both develop their knowledge of specialist areas of business and management and develop the research skills essential for doctoral research. Many students who complete an MRes go on to apply to study a PhD.
The MRes programme is organised into 13 subject-specific pathways, the choice of which will depend on the Subject Academic Group of the supervisor, the nature of the research topic, and your prior experience. Available pathways are:
- Accounting and Finance
- Corporate Strategy
- Decision Sciences and Operational Research
- Healthcare Management
- Human Resource Management
- Information Systems
- International Business and Management
- Operations Management
- Organisational Psychology
- Public Sector Management
- Science, Technology and Innovation
The Master of Philosophy is a one year postgraduate research degree. Students undertake a substantial research project and may undertake some of the research training available to PhD students. Applicants should hold a first class or upper second class UK Bachelors degree or equivalent.
We offer a Masters programme which focuses on enterprise and entrepreneurship.
Alliance MBS works in collaboration with colleagues in the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences to offer a four year doctoral level research degree. Each research project is defined jointly by the university and the collaborating organisation (usually an industrial company) and is designed to meet a strategic business need. Students gain first-hand experience of working closely with their sponsor and also have an annual stipend of at least £18K per annum.
Contact the EngD Centre for further information.
If you do not require a visa to study in the UK, you can apply to study any of the doctoral and postgraduate research programmes at Alliance Manchester Business School, provided you will be located in the UK for the duration of your studies. Unfortunately, if you need a visa, UK immigration regulations mean that we cannot currently offer you a place to study part-time. You may wish to consider the DBA programme which is offered as a blended learning programme.
Yes, but we only recommend part-time study to those candidates who live within commuting distance of the School, particularly for the Research Training stage of the programme. International students are not normally permitted to study on a part-time basis. Part-time students are expected to undertake their research training and to study in Manchester on a regular basis throughout their programme.
Part-time programmes expect that students will study at 50% the rate of a full-time student. A part-time PhD programme will take six years to complete.
