Biography

Prior to returning to University as a mature student, Dr Makin was an electrical engineer. Following training as a 'student apprentice' with the North West Electricity Board, he worked for ten years in various capacities with the Board, GEC and Rank Xerox. After graduating in psychology from Manchester University he spent five years at Bradford University Management Centre, as a Research Assistant and an ESRC funded doctoral student. During this time he undertook consultancy work in personnel selection, interviewing skills and staff appraisal.

Publications used as set books for various courses are; Makin, P J, Cox, C J (2004) Changing Behaviour at Work, Routledge; and Makin, P J, Cooper, C L, & Cox, C J (1996) Organisations and the Psychological Contract. London: British Psychological Society.

Dr Makin has run training courses for numerous industrial and commercial organizations, including Shell, BP, Foster Wheeler, Woolworths, Kirklees Council, Argos, UKAEA, and Granada Television. Topics have included staff appraisal; motivation; leadership; group relationships; communication; inter-personal skills; and the changing of work behaviour. Recently Dr Makin has been involved in behaviourally-based safety projects for a number of organizations. This work is now expanding into the area of Quality Management.

Teaching and Research interests

Current interests include: Behavioural Approaches to Various Management Problems; the Psychological Contract; and Organisational Justice.
