Accounting, accountability and corporate governance

Accounting, Accountability, and Corporate Governance research at MBS embodies an intellectual tradition that encourages research across the broad spectrum of the accounting and accountability subject areas and which is respectful of all forms of research methodology.

The research in this area is international in scope, and combines work on both developed and developing nations and markets. It includes academic issues underlying the theoretical and methodological foundations of Accounting, Accountability, and Governance, through to applied research of immediate business and policy relevance. Research areas include: corporate reporting and accountability, auditing, international financial reporting regulation, corporate social reporting and sustainability, risk reporting, management accounting, market-based accounting research, and corporate governance.

This research area is led by the Manchester Accounting and Finance Group (MAFG) which is one of the leading accounting and finance groups in Europe. MAFG's academic staff are well-represented on the editorial boards of leading academic journals, on standard setting bodies and on the research and governance boards of professional accounting institutes. MAFG's research is regularly supported by external research grants from the ESRC and numerous professional bodies and highly regarded charitable research foundations, including the Prince's Trust and its work on Accounting for Sustainability.

MAFG is an active player in the organisation of the academic accounting and finance community, both nationally and internationally, with a number of its staff, for example, having been awarded the British Accounting Association's distinguished academic fellow of the year. MAFG runs a vibrant research seminar programme, attracting both top-class scholars and senior members of the accounting profession. The MAFG doctoral training programme, which is a specialist stream of the MBS doctoral program, is supported by ESRC and EU Marie Curie funding.
