Human resource management

MBS has a very strong international reputation in the fields of Human Resource Management and Industrial Relations. Our research activities span several inter-related themes in the fields of HRM, industrial relations, work organisation and comparative employment systems. We seek to develop internal collaborative projects and also have long-standing successful external networks, mostly in Europe and the US. The strength of our research is evident from the quality of research outputs, including publications in leading world-class journals and highly cited research monographs. Current contributions to academic debates include issues of gender inequality, inter-organisational relations, trade union structure and strategy, health sector employment, varieties of European employment models, forms of regulation, minimum wages and low pay, service sector skills and multinational company HR policies.

The group also has an excellent record in securing external funds for employment research. During 2009 and 2010, funding bodies include the Department of Health, the Leverhulme Trust, the Economic and Social Research Council, the European Commission, the International Labour Organisation, the European Trade Union Institute and the European Foundation. Research for UK and international policy bodies underpins our strong commitment to delivering high profile research evidence that facilitates and improves knowledge among policy-makers, employer bodies and trade unions.
