Innovation studies, science and technology policy

Manchester is a world leading centre for innovation studies. The Manchester Institute of Innovation Research has a longstanding tradition of research in the areas of science policy, innovation studies and management of R&D. In recent years this expertise has grown to encompass new areas of study including sustainable technology, entrepreneurship and enterprise. All these areas of scholarship draw on techniques such as foresight and policy evaluation where Manchester has a global reputation and extensive experience of advice at government level.

Strength in these areas is evident from a high level of grant income, not just in areas of innovation but also on related topics such as sustainable consumption or management of climate change. A high output of technical papers is reinforced by hosting three academic journals in the fields of R&D Management, Technology Management and Foresight. Growing strength in the field of entrepreneurship is reinforced by close association with the Manchester Enterprise Centre with an unrivalled practical approach to developing enterprise skills both on and off campus.
