Short courses
At Manchester Business School we deliver science and technology policy short courses and seminars through the Manchester Institute of Innovation Research.
Building on its long-standing programme of research and teaching activities, the institute runs a series of focused short courses designed to draw together academic, government and commercial participants. Broadly there are two sorts of course: those which operate on a regular basis and are advertised accordingly, and those designed specifically to the needs of a particular user.
The most important of our long standing courses are Foresight, Beyond Business as Usual, a course for sponsors and practitioners of Foresight, and Evaluation of Science and Technology Policies. These have an international reputation and are the leading UK courses in the area. Both involve a series of intensive lecture and interactive sessions with senior Manchester scholars and invited experts.
The aim is to equip participants with both an understanding of the relevant issues as well as some practical experience in the management of problems. The courses are international in terms of attendees, and also provide participants with valuable networking benefits. Courses are modular, offering the option of one- or two-day intensive sessions or more extensive programmes based over five days. The modular structure means the courses can be designed to fit individual needs; they can be held in Manchester or where required by clients.
New developments
In addition to the above, the institute provides expert input to a series of externally organised courses in the areas of science and technology policy, evaluation of research, innovation and technical change, and information and communications technology policy. We are also constantly developing new additions to our portfolio. In association with the PRIME Network of Excellence we have developed and successfully delivered a new short course on Science, Technology and Innovation Policy: trends and challenges. Finally, we have developed targeted short courses on research and transferable skills for doctoral researchers working in and around the areas of STI policy and innovation studies, and on University research evaluation and strategy development. For details of how these latter two courses could be tailored to your specific needs please contact Siobhan Drugan in the first instance (see below).
