The ESRC Centre for Research on Socio-Cultural Change (CRESC) is a £3.2 million Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC)-funded major international Research Centre analysing socio-cultural change. It is the first major research centre in Britain to develop a broad, empirically-focused account of cultural change and its economic, social and political implications.

CRESC will bring together the theoretical and methodological expertise of The University of Manchester and Open University staff in disciplines as diverse as census and survey statistics, geography, history, social anthropology and sociology as well as business.

The Centre opened in 2004 and its research agenda focuses on themes central to the analysis of socio-cultural change:

  • Theme 1: Cultural Economy
  • Theme 2: Media and Economic and Social Change
  • Theme 3: Culture, Governance and Citizenship
  • Theme 4: Cultural Values and Politics

The centre and MBS
MBS has an important input to the Centre's research. Professor Karel Williams of the Accounting and Finance Division is Co-Director of the Centre, and several other members of MBS staff are involved in various Centre projects on giant firm strategy, business outsourcing, public sector restructuring, financial literacy and business elites:
