Jeremy's previous appointments were at the Industrial Relations Research Unit of the University of Warwick, where he started employment as a research fellow in 1989, and before that at the University of Keele. He studied for a PhD on trade union mergers at the University of Warwick under the supervision of Sir George Bain. In 2003 Jeremy edited a book on trade unions in Europe that includes chapters on all EU member states (with the single exception of Luxembourg), together with chapters on Hungary, Norway and EU level developments. More recently he has published books on the trade union merger process in Britain and Germany, and on the development of European works councils.
My research focuses on trade union structure, organisation and activity in Britain and Western Europe. In Britain the core of the research comprises a series of surveys sent to new members, members, activists, full-time officers and leavers. Over the last decade he has assembled a large data series on these issues, which comprise responses from members of most of the major unions in Britain. In Europe the research highlights efforts to generate new agendas appropriate to the circumstances of the early twenty-first century. In addition, I am also engaged in research on European Works Councils, which attempts to assess their efficacy as information and consultation bodies in terms of the initial intentions of the European Commission and in terms of their utility to working men and women.
He brings with him a research contract held with the European Trade Union Institute (ETUI), the research arm of the European Trade Union Confederation. This contract is initially for five years, with a possibility of renewal thereafter, and occupies half of his time.
His current teaching covers International Human Resource Management and Industrial Relations.
