Biography

Mike joined Manchester Business School in January 2009, having previously worked at the University of Leicester, School of Management as Professor of Organisational Behaviour (2003-2008). Before that he worked at Warwick Business School, University of Warwick as a Lecturer (1994-1998) and Senior Lecturer (1998-2003) and as a Lecturer at Cardiff Business School (1987-1994). He began his career as a Research Fellow at Loughborough University, Department of Social Sciences (1982-1987). He holds a PhD and a first class degree in Industrial Economics, both from the University of Nottingham.

Research Interests

Mike's research is primarily concerned with understanding innovation, knowledge, networking and learning processes within and between organizations. He has been principal investigator on a number of large recent ESRC and EPSRC research projects investigating innovation processes, knowledge management, inter-organizational relations, project management and project-based learning across a range of sectors, including manufacturing, construction, biomedical and healthcare. His research interests also include leadership, managers and professionals and this is reflected in his involvement in current SDO-funded research on understanding knowledge mobilization and utilization by healthcare managers. He has also published extensively on the organization and management of the construction process. He is a member of theCentre for Research in the Management of Projects (CRMP) atManchester Business School and is also a founding member and former Co-Director (1997-2003) of the Innovation, Knowledge and Organizational Networks research centre (IKON), based at Warwick Business School where he is also an Associate Fellow. Since 2000 he has been an Associate Editor of Organization and also serveson a number of editorial boards in the business/management and construction management fields.
