Mark Winter is a Senior Lecturer at Alliance Manchester Business School and course director of several management modules including The Practising Manager on the Global MBA. These courses have evolved out of his experiences of working with experienced managers on MBA and MSc programmes in UK universities, including AMBS and the School of MACE at the University of Manchester, Said Business School, and formerly Cranfield School of Management, Warwick Business School, and Lancaster University Management School. His experimental teaching and research approach is influenced too by his experiences of working with organisations such as Rolls-Royce, National Grid, QuoLux, BAM, NDA, Tesco, Warburtons, Royal Liver Group, the Probation Service and the NHS.
His main educational interest is in developing courses and frameworks to enrich the capabilities and perspectives of practising managers and other practitioners. He is currently developing a collaborative inquiry methodology for facilitative leaders and is piloting a new professional development project linked to The Practising Manager course on Manchester's Global MBA. This latest project builds on the successful development of a reflective practice dissertation for UoM's School of MACE which over three hundred students have now completed since it was first introduced in 2004. He is also the lead author of a book called Images of Projects, which was inspired by Gareth Morgan’s best-selling book Images of Organization, and in 2004-2006 he led a UK government-funded research project called Rethinking Project Management which published its findings and recommendations in the International Journal of Project Management.
Before joining UMIST in 2002, he worked at Lancaster University Management School and before that worked as a management consultant in IT. His PhD in Management Science (2002) was supervised by Professor Peter Checkland whose work on systems thinking and action research has profoundly influenced his work at the University of Manchester.
