Biography

Paula Hyde joined MBS in March 2015. She holds visiting positions at Macquarie University and Durham University. Previously she taught at the Universities of Durham, Manchester and Salford and held a visiting position at the Faculty of Medicine, University of New South Wales. Her research and teaching interests lie in organising care, sociology of work and critical and psychodynamic explorations of how care is organised. She is an executive committee member of the Learned Society for the Study of Organising in Health Care (SHOC) in the Academy of Social Sciences. She has published several books and refereed articles in journals such as British Journal of Management, Human Relations, Journal of Management Studies and Organization Studies. Before commencing an academic career she worked as an occupational therapist in mental health services.

Research Interests

Paula Hyde’s research and teaching focuses on the effects of organising on the way work gets done. She led several research projects for the National Institute for Health Research using ethnographic methods to examine the realities of working life for managers and staff in different types of health service organisation. Her research interests include the organisation dynamics of elder care, human resource management and more recently, health service management and institutional abuse. She conducts psychodynamic research into organizational life particularly in health and social care organisations. Her research has been published in journals such as Journal of Management Studies, Human Resource Management, International Journal of Human Resource Management and Sociology of Health and Illness. Her books include Critical Leadership (2013), Culture and Climate in Health Care (2010) and Organizing and Reorganizing Health Care (2008).

She receives research funding in connection with her studies; from, for example, National Institute for Health Research Service Delivery and Organisation programme, Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, Comic Relief and Department of Health Policy Research Unit. Her involvement with the Organisational Behaviour in Health Care conference has led to two books and her research into psychodynamic theory and organisational change has resulted in the publication of several book chapters and a number of articles in journals such as Human Relations, Journal of Managerial Psychology, Human Resource Management Journal and Organization Studies.
