Free choice options at MBS
What are free choice options?
Business and Management for all programmes, or BMaP, is a suite of undergraduate business and management courses at varying levels offered by Manchester Business School. The courses are open to all students across the University who are eligible to take 'free choice' options as part of their degree structure, providing they meet the entry criteria for the course(s) concerned. Visiting students and those on exchange programmes are also eligible to be considered for some/all of the BMaP courses in 2009/10.
There are numerous reasons why students choose to take BMaP courses
- to be taught by top academics
- to gain business acumen
- to include on your CV
- to complement and sometimes contrast major studies
- to meet students from other Schools and Faculties within the University
- simple interest in the subject area
Detailed information on the individual BMaP courses available can be obtained from the Faculty of Humanities online course database
Teaching and learning
BMaP courses are taught by internationally-recognised leaders in their
field from MBS in a variety of interesting and informative methods. All
courses are taught by lecture format and some additionally incorporate seminars
and workshops to provide the opportunity for presentations and to aid discussions
and lively debate. Students of BMaP courses benefit from the specialist
Precinct library, located on the site of Manchester Business School.
The Guide for undergraduate students taking BMaP courses in MBS can be downloaded here. This gives you an introduction to BMaP courses and provides information on MBS student and academic support services, teaching and learning and assessment policies.

Assessment
All BMaP courses are credit rated and therefore include assessed work. Most are assessed by examination, either as 100% of the overall mark or a percentage. Where the examination is not 100% the remaining assessment is made up of pieces of coursework, which could include essays, reports or presentations, with some elements being individual while others may involve group work.
Application Process (for current students only)
If you wish to take a BMaP course and you meet the pre- and co-requisites, detailed on the online course database, complete the application form and return it to your 'home'/registering School. You will then receive confirmation from your home School as to whether you have been accepted onto the course. If you are a visiting/exchange student you should return your form to either the Study Abroad Unit or your Erasmus Coordinator.
If your application is successful you can find details of the timetable information for the courses on D floor in the MBS East building or via the MBS UG intranet.
