Shaking the Money Tree: Experiments for a Fair Economy

The Social Responsibility and Engagement Committee at AMBS, in collaboration with Alexia Yates, Lecturer in Modern European History, University of Manchester, have organised an event as part of the upcoming ESRC Festival of Social Science in Manchester.
Artists and activists Hilary Powell and Dan Edelstyn will join for a screening of their documentary film ‘Bank Job’, an account of creative solutions to the current debt crisis. (You may have read about their work in the Guardian or FT, or in the current Big Issue, if you’ve seen it.)
The film chronicles their recent initiatives running a community bank in London (known at the Hoe Street Central Bank, or HSCB), dedicated to raising funds through printing ‘money’ and ‘bonds’, which are then used to buy and extinguish local payday debt. Dr. Sarah Roddy and Dr. Patrick Doyle from the University of Manchester will be among those offering reflections on the theme of finance and social justice, along with geographer Desiree Fields from the University of Sheffield and Nick Money, Director Of Development at Centre for Community Finance Europe.
