Lord David Willetts, the former minister for Universities and Science, is to deliver the Fred Jevons Science Policy lecture during the EuroScience Open Forum (ESOF) conference at the University of Manchester next month.
His lecture Science, technology and industrial strategy: What government can and cannot do, will discuss how government supports science and technology, and how it can frame an effective industrial strategy.
The Fred Jevons lecture commemorates the founding professor of Liberal Studies in Science at the University of Manchester which has long been a major centre for social, economic and historical studies of science and technology. The Manchester Institute of Innovation Research (MIoIR) at Alliance MBS is one of the key bodies that keeps that strong tradition alive today.
Lord Willetts, who is Executive Director of the Resolution Foundation and chair of the British Science Association, also previously worked at HM Treasury and the Number 10 Policy Unit. He has written widely on economic and social policy, most notably with his book ‘The Pinch’.
