Undoubtedly, the main reason I’m here in Manchester is to study. It is very motivating to be part of one of the best universities in the UK and be taught by top lecturers in the field. I can’t lie. I spend most of the time studying. The Masters course lasts for only one year, so as you can imagine, it is very intense.
However, that doesn’t mean that you won’t have time for leisure activities. Actually, I’d say it’s almost mandatory to save some time to do other things. Manchester has a lot of activities to offer, especially if you are student.
First of all, there are many places that provide good deals for students. Cinemas such as AMC or HOME, for instance, offer ticket discounts if you show your student ID. In that sense, you’ll be able to watch a movie for approximately £5. Likewise, some restaurants are student friendly, offering discounts on the final price. Those that I’ve visited the most are Pancho’s Burritos (the best burritos in Manchester) and Vapiano, a cool Italian food restaurant.
What about keeping fit? If you like sport, Manchester is the right spot. Indeed, there are many gyms nearby the University with great facilities and an array of classes, such as the Armitage and Sugden sports centres. There’s also the Aquatics Centre, which is the ideal choice for those who enjoy swimming. To be honest, before coming to Manchester I wasn’t a big fan of going to the gym. However, it turned out to be very convenient, especially for its flexibility. I joined Sugden sports centre for a 12-month membership (£150 in total), and I can go whenever I want (or whenever I have free time).
Recently, I joined The University of Manchester Live Music Society as well. I love music and back in my home country I had a band with some friends. I play bass guitar and I was really missing it. Now, thanks to the society I can keep enjoying this hobby here in Manchester. Basically, if you play a musical instrument, you can join the society and they will place you in a band of people with similar interests as you.
Last but not least, there are many sports tournaments going around. Last month, I played a mixed futsal tournament, which means that it is played by teams of men and women. It was a new experience for me and I really enjoyed it. Actually, it allowed me to meet new friends. The members of the team were great, very committed and supportive, and now we are planning to play more tournaments together.
As you can see, there are several things to do in Manchester besides studying. You only have to organise your schedule and go for them.
