Building links with Vietnam

Lecturer in finance Viet Anh Dang is continuing to build strong links between Alliance MBS and his home country of Vietnam.

Last summer Viet co-chaired the second Vietnam International Conference in Finance in Ho Chi Minh City, which gives academics, doctoral students and practitioners the opportunity to share interests, present new research results, and discuss current and challenging issues in areas such as corporate finance and banking regulation.

The two-day conference, attended by up to 100 people, was jointly organised by the Vietnam Finance Association International (VFAI), the University of Economics and Law in Ho Chi Minh City, and the Foreign Trade University in Hanoi.

Viet, who was among those academics who gave presentations, said the event was playing a pivotal role in progressing the study of accounting and finance in Vietnam, and in developing links with Western universities.

He said: “Vietnam has one of the fastest-growing economies in Asia and there is an increasing demand for the study of accounting and finance in the country. The conference was a timely event that provided an excellent opportunity for Vietnamese academics, doctoral students and practitioners to exchange ideas with finance scholars from around the world.”

Some 70 high-quality papers were selected for presentation at the conference which covered a wide range of topics such as financial markets and institutions, risk management and investment efficiency, and corporate finance and governance.

Added Viet: “Many studies provided relevant and important implications for practitioners and policymakers in Vietnam’s emerging capital markets. The conference was also a great opportunity for Vietnamese universities to explore the possibility of collaborating on research and training with international scholars.”

Viet was also recently nominated for an Outstanding Contribution Award by VFAI for his contribution to the development of the organisation during his presidency from 2014-15.

This year’s International Conference takes place in the resort of Da Nang on June 9-10. If you would like any further details please contact Viet at vietanh.dang@manchester.ac.uk
