Employee gentleness in care settings

This research project involves two ethnographic case studies of employee gentleness - one in a palliative care setting and another in a social care setting.

Employee gentleness is a form of care giving about which very little is known. The case studies will take an interdisciplinary approach by using perspectives from organisational and social psychology (e.g emotion regulation, interpersonal behaviour), nursing (e.g theories of care) and organisation studies (e.g managerialism, strategic HRM).

The case studies will extend knowledge of employee care giving by providing a more detailed and expanded model of employee gentleness and how it is shaped by the social and organisational context. To increase the impact of the findings, the results will be used to develop an online training course on employee gentleness that employees can use as part of continuing professional development. The course will be piloted on nursing and social care employees.
