This event will be hosted by Nadia Papamichail, Professor of Management Sciences at AMBS.

From Chernobyl to ChatGPT – decision-making in the age of AI

Decision-making is a vital professional and personal skill. Managers and decision-makers, whether in public and private enterprises, strive for faster and better decisions but their efforts are hindered by complexity, uncertainty, conflicting objectives, trade-offs and information overload (or lack of information)! Additionally, they often have to navigate complex ethical considerations and meet the needs of different stakeholders.

In light of these challenges, Nadia draws for her extensive experience across multiple projects to demonstrate how decision-aiding and AI-powered tools can be embedded into organisational decision-making processes to enhance decision-making efficiency and effectiveness.

She will argue that decision analytics provides a comprehensive set of sound approaches for systematically structuring and analysing decisions.

Finally, Nadia will discuss the latest trends in decision support (including AI, advanced analytics and conversational interfaces) as well as her latest areas of research (including topics such as explainability and AI ethics).

Nadia Papamichail

Nadia is a Professor at Alliance Manchester Business School (AMBS), The University of Manchester and a Fellow of the Alan Turing Institute.

She has a track record of inter-disciplinary research drawing from decision theory, artificial intelligence, operations research, digital systems and behavioural and psychology studies. Her research has two strands: building explainable decision support tools and exploring the effect of individual characteristics on customer decision behaviours such as purchase intention and service adoption.

Over the years, she has led a range of research projects and received funding from various funding bodies including the EPSRC, Innovate UK and the Alan Turing Institute. She has recently been appointed as member of the TREx (Turing Research Ethics) panel.

Nadia is actively involved in leading UK and US Professional Analytics Societies (ORS and INFORMS).  She is the elected Chair of DASIG (Decision Analysis Group), elected Secretary/Treasurer of the MCDM (Multiple Criteria Decision Making) section of INFORMS and elected Member of the Council of the US DAS (Decision Analysis Society).

The event will be facilitated by Professor Simon French, Emeritus Professor at Alliance Manchester Business School.
