Undergraduate English language requirements
All applicants are expected to hold a suitable English language qualification.
You must be able to provide recent evidence that your spoken and written command of the English language is adequate for the programme/s for which you have applied.
Accepted English language qualifications
IELTS - International English Language Testing System
6.5 overall, with no less than 6 in any individual component
TOEFL - Test of English as a Foreign Language (internet-based)
90 overall, with no less than 20 in any individual component
CAE - Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English
Grade C – please provide your unique and special numbers to be verified online
GCSE/O Level English Language (as a first language)
IGCSE English (as a first language)
Grade B - you must have completed the fully assessed oral examination (please note we only accept the Cambridge IGCSE First Language English 0500 if you have taken the optional speaking and listening tests)
Please note that the test date for the IELTS or TOEFL qualification must be no more than two years before the start date of your degree course. For all other English language qualifications listed above the test date must be no more than seven calendar years before the start date of your degree course.
Pre-sessional English language courses
If your score is only slightly below our minimum English language entry requirements we can still consider your application. If you have a strong application we may decide to offer you a place subject to attending an academic pre-sessional English language course at The University of Manchester.
