Undergraduate English language requirements

Selected EU applicants and all international applicants are expected to hold a suitable English language qualification.

You must be able to provide recent evidence that your spoken and written command of the English language is adequate for the programme/s for which you have applied.

Accepted English language qualifications

Details of our requirements for the most popular English language qualifications are listed below.

IELTS - International English Language Testing System
6.5 overall, with no less than 6 in any individual component

CAE - Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English
Grade C – please provide your unique and special numbers to be verified online

GCSE/O Level English Language (as a first language)
Grade B

IGCSE English (as a first language)
Grade B - you must have completed the fully assessed oral examination

Test validity

Please note that the date of your test must be no more than two years before the start date of your degree course (18th September 2017).

Pre-sessional English language courses

It may be possible for applicants who do not meet these requirements to complete our 5 week pre-sessional English language course at the University Language Centre (ULC). However, this must be pre-approved by our undergraduate admissions team.  Full details including application deadlines, course fees and how to apply to the ULC are available here.
