Dr Stefan Zagelmeyer is Reader in Comparative and International Business at Alliance Manchester Business School. He is currently doing research on international business and human rights, comparative business and management, and international human resource management.

Abstract:

Driven by the debates on corporate social responsibility and the endorsement of the UN Guiding Principles on Business in 2011, recent years have seen an increased interest among public policy-makers, practitioners and academics in the topic of business and human rights, especially as far as the operation of multinational corporations and global value chains is concerned.

This presentation will introduce and critically analyse the current debate on business and human rights and report on ongoing research on international business and human rights at Alliance Manchester Business School. The first part of the presentation will outline the development of the debate on business and human rights and related policy initiatives since the 1970s.

It will then contextualize and critically assess the different strands of the discussion. The second part of the presentation will report on current research projects on business and human rights at AMBS, in particular on (i) a comparative study on corporate human rights reporting of MNEs from eight countries and (ii) research on the link between foreign direct investment and human rights.

Seminar series on Business Ethics, Social Responsibility and Sustainability

In line with the Research with Impact strategic priority under the University’s Goal 3 agenda Social Responsibility and Engagement Committee at AMBS launched a seminar series in 2016-2017. The purpose of the seminar series is to invite researchers from AMBS and other business schools to present their work for discussion and also to explore new avenues in thinking and researching the area.
