ECO2Clouds, an EC-funded project in which Dr Usman Wajid and Professor Nikolay Mehandjiev from MBS were the scientific coordinators, has received a rare rating of “Excellent” from the European Commission.

The project demonstrated that new cloud scheduling algorithms,  devised at the University of Manchester,  can reduce CO2 emissions of cloud applications by 40 per cent to 80 per cent.

The two-year €2m project involved three super-computer centres (Edinburgh, Rennes and Stuttgart) and was run collaboratively with Professor John Keane from the School of Computer Science, the  University of Manchester and Politecnico di Milano.  ATOS Spain, the project coordinators are now leading follow-up activity to further exploit the project ideas.
