2017 has been an amazing year for me and I got to spend the last month of the year back at home with my friends and family. Before the winter break, we have been busy with submissions but there was something everyone was looking forward to, the annual AMBS undergraduate ball! The AMBS undergraduate ball has always been good fun with good food, music and photo booths. However, the tickets are hard to get! 400 tickets are released online each year and are sold out within minutes. This being our final year, my group of friends and I made sure we arrived earlier this year to take pictures for keepsake.
I spent the remaining days of December back in Malaysia. My family and I went on a short trip to Kota Kinabalu in Sabah and I had the best time there. We stayed in Shangri-La Tanjung Aru resort, a beach side resort that is famous for its sunset view. We spent most of our time lazing around, enjoying the Malaysian weather, which is 30 degrees all year round. The resort also had free cocktails every evening! Sabah is also well known for its beaches, rainforest and coral reefs. Unfortunately, our stay wasn’t long enough to explore all that Sabah had to offer.
Being home in December also meant I get to be home for one of the most significant celebrations for my family, winter solstice festival. Winter solstice signifies longer daylight hours returning and many families get together to make balls of glutinous rice that symbolise reunion. My grandma has her own recipe when it comes to this and I have definitely missed celebrating this festival with my family. Being able to celebrate Christmas with my family is also a plus. The malls back at home has definitely improved their game when it comes to Christmas decorations!
I am currently bank in Manchester revising for the upcoming exams. 2017 has been another amazing year in Manchester and I am sure 2018 will be great! It is a bittersweet feeling knowing that this will be my last semester here in the University of Manchester but I am determined to make the most out of it. I hope everyone had a great holiday and has a great year ahead!
